Security step-up: new CCTV cameras installed
Thanks to Bernard Chambers Charitable Trust, the generosity of a private donor, and Te Kaunihera ā-Rohe o Heretaunga – Hastings District Council (HDC), CCTV security cameras are now operational at the Main Gates entrance on Te Mata Peak Rd, helping improve safety at this key access point to the Park.
Managed and monitored by HDC, the security system includes upcoming roadside signage to advise drivers they are entering an area where CCTV cameras are operating. While the council oversees the network, NZ Police can access footage if necessary to assist with investigations.
Te Mata Park Trust Manager Sarah Austin-Smith said improving security at the Main Gates car park was important. “The safety of our visitors is a top priority. These cameras are an important addition to the Park’s infrastructure, enhancing security at our main entrance point and helping provide greater reassurance for visitors.”
Clint Adamson, Security Manager at HDC, said, “This project is a great example of what can be achieved when local organisations work together with a shared focus on community safety. Hastings District Council is proud to have partnered with the Te Mata Park Trust, Bernard Chambers Charitable Trust and private supporters to help deliver this initiative. While CCTV is only one part of the wider picture, we hope these cameras help provide reassurance to visitors, support Police if incidents occur, and contribute to Te Mata Park remaining a safe and welcoming place for everyone to enjoy.”
Generous seed funding from Bernard Chambers Charitable Trust was the catalyst for getting this project off the ground. “We are incredibly grateful to the team at HDC, Bernard Chambers Charitable Trust, and our private donor. Their combined commitment was vital to making this project happen and turning our safety plans into reality,” Austin-Smith added.
A similar security setup is planned for the Tauroa Rd entrance next financial year. In the meantime, visitors are reminded to lock their vehicles, keep valuables out of sight, and report any suspicious behaviour directly to Police.
