Meet our new Aspiring Trustee: Jess Thomas
Aspiring Trustees bring fresh perspectives, valuable skills and professional experience to support the Park’s stewardship, while gaining hands-on exposure to governance practice, strategic decision-making, and community leadership.
We asked Jess to share a bit about herself and her experience
Tell us a bit about yourself.
My family moved back to Hawke’s Bay from Wellington in 2021, chasing better weather and a slower pace of life, both of which the Bay has delivered! I have two children at primary school in Havelock North, and we are regulars on the walking tracks in the Park.
What inspired you to become an Aspiring Trustee?
Having the opportunity to help ensure that Te Mata Park continues to be a thriving and healthy part of our community into future generations – I love to picture my kids being able to take their kids for walks through the trees we are planting today.
What are you looking forward to contributing to the Trust?
My background in finance and strategy means I’m well placed to contribute to ensuring the long-term financial sustainability of the Trust; and I’m looking forward to the opportunity to learn from the more experienced Trustees.
What’s your favourite place in Te Mata Park?
Has to be the top of the Peak – there’s nothing quite like seeing the whole region stretching out in front of you. The Giant Redwoods would be a close second though – such a magical place.
